Yueyaquan (月牙泉)

View Interesting Maps in a larger map

Yueyaquan (Chinese: 月牙泉; pinyin: Yuèyá Quán) is a crescent-shaped lake in the oasis, 5 km southwest of the city Dunhuang of Gansu province, China. It was named Yueyaquan since Qing Dynasty. According to measurement made in 1960, the average depth of the lake was 4 to 5 meters, with maximum depth 7.5 meters. In the following 40 years, the depth of lake continually declined. In the early 1990s, the area of the lake had shrunken to only 1.37-acre (5,500 m2) with average depth of 0.9 meter (maximum 1.3 meter). Although local government had plans to restore the depth through filling with water, the lack of budget has delayed their actions. The lake and the surrounding deserts are very popular with tourists, who are offered camel and 4x4 rides.

Dafen (town of painting replicas)

View Interesting Maps in a larger map

Dafen (Chinese: 大芬社区; pinyin: Dàfēn Shèqū) is a suburb of Buji, Longgang, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, China. In the early 1990s a group of about twenty artists under the leadership of the painter and businessman Huang Jiang took up residence in this town. They specialised in the making of large numbers of replicas of oil paintings by masters such as Van Gogh, Dalí, da Vinci, Rembrandt or Warhol[1]

These replicas were sold in many countries for relatively low prices. The endeavor was quite successful and the demand for replicas increased. In order to fulfill the demand more and more artists took up residence and started to make a living, the estimate (2006) being in the thousands.

Many of the artists are trained at art academies in the required techniques and produce dozens of replicas daily.

These replicas are of paintings of artists who have died more than seventy years ago and consequently out of copyright. The only requirement is that it is made clear that these paintings are replicas. Currently, the village sells both originals and replicas. It is possible to commission paintings for low prices. The village is a gated development, recognizable by the large sculpture of a hand holding a paintbrush outside its gates.

Hoh Xil [Mongolian: Khökh shil (Russian transcription), Хөхшил Blue ridge; Chinese: 可可西里; pinyin: Kěkěxīlǐ; Tibetan transcription from Mongolian ཁུ་ཁུ་ཞིལ།, Tibetan original name: ཨ་ཆེན་གངས་རྒྱལ།།, literally Lord of 10 thousands of mountains, Chinese: 阿卿贡嘉; pinyin: Ā Qīng Gòng Jiā] is an isolated region in the northwestern part of the Tibetan plateau in China. It is China's least and the world's third-least populated area.

The region covers 83,000 square kilometres at an average elevation of 4,800 meters, between the Tanggula and Kunlun mountain chains in the border areas of Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, Northwest China's Qinghai Province and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is one of the major headwater sources of the Yangtze River. 45,000 square kilometres, at an average elevation of 4,600 metres, were made into a national nature reserve in 1995. The Qingzang railway runs along the eastern boundary of the reserve [1].

Despite the harsh climate, Hoh Xil is home to more than 230 species of wild animals, 20 of which are under state protection, including the wild yak, wild donkey, white-lip deer, brown bear and the endangered Tibetan antelope or chiru.

CCTV Headquarters, Beijing

The CCTV Headquarters is a skyscraper that is currently under construction in Beijing. The building will be the new headquarters of China Central Television. Groundbreaking took place on September 22, 2004. The building will be completed in December 2008. Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren of OMA are the architects for the building, while Arup provides the complex engineering design. The building will stand at 234 metres (768 ft) tall and will have 51 floors.[1]

The main building is not a traditional tower, but a continuous loop of five horizontal and vertical sections covering 4,100,000 square feet (381,000 m2) of floor space, creating an irregular grid on the building’s facade with an open center. The construction of the building is considered to be a structural challenge, especially because it is in a seismic zone. Because of its radical shape, it has acquired the nickname dà kùchā (大裤叉)[2], translated into English as "Big Underpants"[3] or "Big Shorts".[4]

A second building, the Television Cultural Centre, includes a hotel, a visitor's centre, a large public theatre, and exhibition spaces. It is visible from the main intersection of the new Beijing Central Business District through the window of the main CCTV headquarters building. A media park forms a landscape of public entertainment, outdoor filming areas, and production studios as an extension of the central green axis of the CBD.[5] The Mandarin Oriental Hotel will be part of the complex.[citation needed]

The building was built in two sections that were joined to complete the loop on December 26, 2007. In order not to lock in structural differentials this connection was planned to be completed at the coldest time of night when the steel in the two towers cooled to the same temperature. .[6]

Green is a code of spring. Now if you want to enjoy a warm spring, choose the green sleeveless Cheongsam. It is made of green silk brocade with big blooming peony patterns. In Chinese culture, peony is the queen of flowers, so it is the symbol of wealth and high position. Only the woman of noble family is entitled to be in Cheongsam with peony patters. V-neck collar decorated with two hand-made frog buttons is different from the traditional mandarin collar. Frog button is a kind of traditional handicraft and it needs a lot of labor. Both sides are made with slits toward the thigh and the length of the Cheongsam is to ankle. An invisible zipper is on the right side, so it is easy for you to wear. Be creative with accessories. (handbag, bracelet, etc) On a sunny afternoon, having a cup of tea in the front porch or the backyard in your house, you will spend a pleasant time with your family.
